Client: Rural Studios / BBC Arts

Sector: Narrative (57 Mins)

Services: Sound Design & Mix

SYNOPSIS

The novel was originally written by John Buchan and previously adapted for screen by Alfred Hitchcock. It tells the story of Richard Hannay, a wealthy former mining engineer seeking intrigue and adventure.

Hannay becomes embroiled in a plot by an organisation of spies called “The 39 Steps”, who are set on stealing British military secrets. He is pursued to the Scottish highlands and has to escape from powerful forces which are trying to crush him.

SOUND DESIGN

Set just before the outbreak of WW1, this episode features lots of engines such as vintage cars, steam trains and propellor planes.

There are shootouts, car chases and explosions which we supported through sound design.

In contrast to this mechanised palette, the unspoiled Scottish Highlands gave us scope to include some immersive wind, rain and coastal atmos.
