SYNOPSIS

Castro Smith is a London-based engraver with Geordie and Philipino heritage.

He got his start as an apprentice with the Goldsmiths Company and subsequently visited Japan to train with master metalworker Kenji Io.

Castro sees his work as a living science which has to be passed down in person, through demonstration and speech. His humility and mastery of his craft shines through in this wonderful documentary.

SOUND DESIGN

We were asked to improve the audio from the original version, which consisted of voiceover and music. The voice was a little muffled and becomes overpowered by the music. The stems weren’t available and the music was in mono, so they were impossible to seperate by conventional means.

We used some of the machine learning-assisted modules in Steinberg’s Spectralayers to seperate the voice from the music, with decent results. We then upmixed the music with Nugen Stereoizer to add a sense of space and with.

To round things off, we did a sound effects / design pass to enhance the narrative and support the fast-paced yet senstive edit.
