Gustav

Delighted to be on the post production team for Gustav, a new short comedy written and directed by Ken Williams and Denis Fitpatrick. I'm looking after the sound mix and music supervision. The two lads always come up with interesting projects - I worked with them last year on the The Final Fairytale, very happy to be on board again!

Receptive. Totally Receptive.

I just put the finishing touches on the audio for Receptive. Totally Receptive, a new short film produced in Cork. It was directed by Chris O'Neill, head of cinema at Triskel Arts Centre, and it features loads of great talent from the Cork region and beyond.

My contribution was the sound design and I also mixed the film. It was a great one to work on as the story cross-cuts between weekend club scenes and an office scene. This meant there were lots of opportunties for interesting sound design.

It's also looking like a preview will be screened as part of a retrospective of Chris's work at the Triskel on Saturday April 15th. We also expect the film to take to the festival circuit later in the year. Watch, as they say, this space.

3 Minute Vessels

I've been working with a great bunch of folks at Manchester Indie Film Production since the middle of last year. It's been gathering momentum ever since and I feel we now have a group of very talented people, with lots of projects in the works. I originally joined as a composer but I've been doing some location sound and audio post production work too.

This is the first short film we relased online, called 3 Minute Vessels. It was directed by AJ Akande and my contribution was the sound design and sound mix.

Last Service

Last Service is the new short documentary by director Bertie Brosnan, produced with the help of funding from Cork City Arts Council. I'm a big fan of Bertie's work and have collaborated with him in the past, so of course I was thrilled to come on board for this project.

It depicts gravedigger Stephen O'Connor at work and at home, meditiating on his job and on mortality. As well as being beautifully shot, it shines some light on a profession that we don't normally hear a lot about. I did the sound mix and composed the music for the credits.

It got its first write up earlier this week in Scannain: http://gearr.scannain.com/irish/last-service-poster/

'Disappear' featured on French documentary

Arte, a public French network dedicated to culture, recently produced this fascinating documentary about the arts scene in Cork. Disappear director Shaun O'Connor is interviewed during the first five minutes (dubbed in French!) and it shows some clips from the film. I'm delighted that something I did the music for is now reaching audiences on mainland Europe. It's only available to watch for another 18 days so catch it while you can.

'Tracks and Traces' mix on Reform Radio

I put together a mix called 'Tracks and Traces', of ambient, kosmiche and minimalist sounds along with spoken word from philosopher and media theorist Marshall McLuhan. I chose to focus on McLuhan as not only did he have some great insights into the media of his day, he was remarkably prescient and much of it could be applied to the internet age.

I'm honoured that Reform Radio broadcast the mix. They're a Manchester-based station putting out an amazing range of content by some of the finest DJs in the region. On top of that, they're a not-for-profit company that supports young adults into employment, so it's a winner all round.

'Disappear' at Film Festivals

Great news! Disappear, a new short directed by award-winning director Shaun O Connor and that I did the music for, is going to be screened at three upcoming festivals: Cork Film, Indie Cork and Kerry Film. There was a fantastic cast and crew involved and it was a joy writing and producing the music. Really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen!

Date Night at Cork Film Festival

Date night.jpg

I was very happy to hear the news that Date Night, a short film directed by Ross Carey and for which I did the music, has been selected to be screened at the 61st Cork Film Festival this year. As well as that, it'll also be shown at the 5th Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival!

Ross is the very talented director behind other shorts such as The Trouble With Aoibhe and Comic Potential, both of which have been screened at a whole heap of festivals over the past few years. I'm honoured to have worked on Date Night and I can't wait to see it on the big screen.

The Final Fairytale at Galway Film Fleadh

Ken Williams and Denis Fitzpatrick are the writer/director team behind the short films The Break and The Daisy Chain, both of which did the rounds on the festival circuit, TV and Aer Lingus flights (!) over the last couple of years. So of course I was delighted to be on board for their new one minute short The Final Fairytale, for which I composed and produced the music. I'm over the moon to announce that it's been selected to be screened at the One Minute Film Festival, part of Galway Film Fleadh on Sunday 10th July at 4.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre Studio.

The film's not online yet but you can check out some of Ken and Denis's previous work here:

Exit: Pursued By A Bear II

The bears' second album is out today! We're so thankful to all our funders who put up the cash so we could record, mix and master it. Producers/mix engineers Cormac O Connor at The Maple Rooms and John Fitzgerald at Lettercollum Studios did a bang-up job, we're delighted with the results. Big up also to DJs like Dan Hegarty, Paul McLoone, Kelly-Anne Byrne and Nialler9 who have all supported us in recent weeks!

The album is available download on iTunes, to stream on Spotify, and we can be found on Facebook also.

Music for 'Disappear'

I'm very pleased to announce that I'm composing and producing the music for my good pal Shaun O'Connor's new short film, 'Disappear.' It's an adaptation of his radio play for screen and features wonderful performances from George Hanover and Frank Prendergast. We've been working away on it behind the scenes and it's been an absolute joy doing so. It's almost ready to go so watch this space!

Event in the Firkin Crane 22/01/16: 5.5.5. 5 Chances

I'm very happy to have been asked by contemporary dancer Inma Pavon to perform at this event, taking place in the Firkin Crane tonight. It's part of her PHD studies on chance and it brings together 5 visual artists / 5 dancers / 5 composers, independently working on a routine or a piece of art or music. The fifteen will be split into groups of three, each group in a different room, and their work will be exhibited / performed together without each person having seen the others' beforehand.

It promises to be something special and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. I've completed a ten minute ambient/soundscape piece for it which I'll be posting on Soundcloud afterwards!

Escape Thru Film

'Tis a new year and a great time to get stuck into new projects. I recently began working with Bartholomew (Bertie) Brosnan. He's the highly talented filmmaker responsible for Sineater, a short film which did the rounds on the festival circuit last year. I did the music two of his new showcase reels: 'Scapes' and 'Light v Dark.' Scapes features some lovely cello playing from Eimear Reidy.

Theme music for RTE's Sketch!

I'm delighted to announce that myself and Eoin O Sullivan (producing music together as Startropic) are working on the theme music for Sketch!, a new comedy pilot TV show for RTE. It's another offering from the team of our friends Shaun O Connor (director/editor), Tadhg Hickey (writer/actor) and Claire O Connell (producer). Between them they have produced a number of short films and a web series for RTE in the past, so we're thrilled to be on board for their latest project. The show airs on Christmas week.

We even took some time out of our busy schedule from writing, producing and mixing the music to make a couple of cameo appearances in the show! Here I am sporting an Ireland jersey and a scowl :-)
